Double Page Spread Production

Before creating my music magazine double page spread I was asked to draw a rough sketch of what I want it to look like so when I am producing it I know where I want everything to be.

I was asked to create a double page spread for my music magazine in quark.
Because the image did not fit with the article and looked out of place I then made the image bigger and made it bleed across the page so it looked connected. I also re sized the article quote and made it bigger so it stood out more.

I deleted some pictures and kept only one but making it bigger so the article had a more professional layout.

I then moved certain sentences around to make it look more like a professional magazine

After getting my worked look at by the teachers I was told to change some things such as the images. They were taken out and one bigger one put back in as they didn`t work the way I had them previously.

The images I had taken were then added onto the pages and I had to make sure none of the writing from the
article didn`t run over the image.

I then created the aticle and imported it onto the page.

At first I started with a blank page with the guides in to help.

Photographs For Double Page Spread

I was asked to conduct an interview with either a band or artist for my Double Page Spread and also have it fit the genre of my music magazine which is Indie/Rock.

I chose the first four photo`s to use for my Contents Page.

Here are some of the photo`s I took but eventually didn`t use.

Contents Page Production

I had to create a contents page for a music magazine by using Quark express to create it. I was asked to stick to the codes and conventions of a music magazine.  But before I could create anything on Quark I was asked to draw a rough sketch of the contents page I wanted to make.

I was asked to create a contents page for my music magazine in Quark.

For the page numbers I created another graphic feature in the shape of a red circle with the number in the middle so it stands out.

Having added the front cover image I then added writing around it to show the reader what pages everything is on.

After getting the teacher to look at my contents page,it was decided that I get rid of the editors letter completely and have the magazine cover in the middle with it annotated about the cover lines.

I imported three images onto the page and titled some of them to make it seem more Indie/Rock. I also Added white boarders around the images to make them stand out.

I then imported a picture I had taken and imported it onto the page

I then wrote the editors letter in word and imported it onto the page along with a photo of the front cover.

I imported the writing from word and added extra words bigger and bolder to stand out.

I added the boxes that will be graphic features.

At first I started with just a blank page.

Photographs for Contents Page

A task was set in lesson to take pictures of a person or group to use for my music magazine front cover. It has to fit in the genre I had picked for my magazine which was Indie/Rock. So I picked a location for where I would be taking the pictures and asked my friend Charlotte Evans to pose for them. To make it look like she was from the Indie/Rock genre I looked at pictures of current Indie/Rock artists and noticed that they wore layers, quite subtle colours, necklaces and bracelets so I had her wear something similar.

I  initially settled with this photo to use for my Contents Page. The image taken in a mid shot could represent the genre of Indie/Rock for many reasons. For example her posture with the one arm on the fence could represent the attitude of Rock but the clothes she is wearing represents Indie.

Here is some photos I contemplated using for the Contents Page

Taken in a medium long shot. The image of her with her hands in her pockets could represent the attitude of Rock but the clothes and bow she is wearing could represent the unique style of Indie.

This is taken in a mid shot and is in the same mise-en-scene as the previous photos.

For the photos above the mise-en-scene is outside and nature is clearly visible in all of them. I used this location because with the natural light from the sun the colours of the mise-en-scene didnt take the attention from the person in the photo but enhanced the picture.

I did take some inside this being one of them. I chose to keep the mise-en-scene to a minimum so the attention and focus was on the person in the photo rather than what is around her. I made her the focus by taking the photo with a plain background and used only one prop; the guitar. This represents the instruments used in Indie/Rock and by having her holding it suggests the style of music she plays.

I also had been to a Coldplay concert and taken some good quality photo`s so I decided to use one of Chris Martin.
I chose to use this photo.Taken in a mid shot the image as a whole represents the genre of the band. It is clear that they play instruments and clothes they are wearing could suggest the more mature sound they have. The main focus of the shot is Chris Martin as he is the main thing that is lit in the photo.

Here are some of the other photo`s I thought about using.

Whilst thinking of ideas to do for my magazine I went to see Indie band One Night Only and used the opportunity to take some photos that I could use.

I used the picture below for the Contents Page as it was the clearest out of the ones I took. Taken in a medium close up the photo reflects the genre of the band. With his long scruffy looking hair reflect the Rock side of the band and the fact that he is holding a microphone reflects the Indie side of the band. Also the lighting allows the focus to be on George Craig rather than what is behind him.

Here are some of the others I took and thought about using.

As I was doing my double page spread on two man band Vertigo I decided to one of the pictures I took to use on my contents page.

I chose to use the picture below.Taken in a mid shot with only one using direct address which invites the reader in. The guitars represent the music they play and the clothes they are wearing reflects the genre of Indie/Rock as they are subtle colours but trendy. (Subtle for the genre Indie, trendy for the genre Rock) The background bricks are also subtle which allows the main focus to be on the band.

Here are some of the other pictures I took.
